Become a Notary in Florida: Quick Checklist
✔️ Be at least 18, a legal FL resident (or permanent resident alien with a Declaration of Domicile), and proficient in English.
✔️ New notaries must complete a mandatory 3-hour education course covering Florida notary law.
✔️ Complete and sign the notary application with a character affidavit from a non-relative who’s known you for at least a year.
✔️ Include your oath of office and obtain a $7,500 surety bond (via American Surety Company).
✔️ Submit your application, course certificate, and fees to your bonding agency.
✔️ Consider purchasing Errors & Omissions insurance to protect yourself from liability.
✔️ After commission approval, order your required notary supplies using your commission number and expiration date.

The good news is that you do not need to purchase a lot of equipment before performing your first notarization. Start with the basics and add other items as your business grows. See below.
Notary Stamp
Your notary stamp is required to perform notarizations in Florida. Make sure you keep it in a secure location and do not allow anyone else to use it.
Notarial Certificates
Sometimes a document will not contain the correct notarial wording. Keeping blank acknowledgment, jurat, and signature witnessing certificates on hand can save you from having to reschedule an appointment.
Pens
Carry several working pens, preferably blue and black ink.
Notary Journal
Florida does not generally require traditional notaries to keep a journal, but many experienced notaries do. A journal can help you keep track of your notarizations and provide an additional layer of protection if questions arise later.
Clipboard
A clipboard comes in handy when meeting clients at hospitals, nursing homes, coffee shops, or other locations where a desk may not be available.
